Self-fueling boat sets off from Paris on 6-year world trip

A boat that fuels itself is triggering all over the world from Paris on a six-year journey that its designers hope will works as a design for emissions-free energy networks of the future.

Energy Observer will utilize its photovoltaic panels, wind turbines and a hydrogen fuel cell system to power its journey. The 5 million-euro ($5.25 million) boat avoids Saturday from Paris towards the Atlantic.

The futuristic-looking 30.5-meter (100-foot) boat will depend on sun or wind throughout the day and take advantage of its hydrogen tanks in the evening. It produces its own hydrogen through electrolysis of sea water.

Originally created in 1983, the boat delighted in an effective profession in open-sea cruising races prior to skippers Frederic Dahirel and Victorien Erussard and a French research study institute transformed it into the Energy Observer task.
